What is Xing Yi Chuan?
Xing Yi Chuan literally translates as "mind-form boxing". The name illustrates the central principle that the forms and shapes assumed by the body are created by the mind. The mind predominates over mere physicality, and optimal success in the style comes from the fusion of mindfulness or effortless thought and action to create the highly effective form of fighting.
Xing Yi Chuan borrows from the principles of the Five Element system of Chinese medicine and cosmic etiology. Also called Five Element Fist (Wu Xing Chuan), the system is based on five "mother" fists and a derived Twelve Animal Fists that are trained into the body's subconscious memory. It is a complete system of exercise that when trained regularly produces superior physical health and self-defense abilities.
Xing Yi Chuan is one of the three main "internal" martial arts of kung fu, along with Tai Chi Chuan and Bagua Zhang. These martial art systems are considered "internal" because they rely on the practitioner's ability to cultivate and utilize "Qi", life energy, as an compounded source of power along with muscular strength. While practitioners of "external" styles concentrate on the outer larger musculature, practitioner's of "internal" martial arts like Xing Yi develop and use connective tissue like the tendons, sinews and ligaments to channel and emit Qi-based power.
Xing Yi Chuan classes are offered on Saturday mornings at 11:30.
